What’s On? Father’s Day Weekend Sorted

Your guide to favourite child status

Question: does anyone really enjoy Father’s Day? Dads everywhere spend the weekend being harassed by suspiciously affectionate children. Mothers feel undervalued. Sons and daughters feel inadequate because their Father’s Day efforts will never quite reflect how much they really love their dads… And that’s if you even have a dad at all.

But whether we like it or not, it’s A Thing and fortunately it’s also shaping up to be an action packed weekend—so here’s your guide to Father’s Day in Esperance.

Saturday morning

Last minute gift-shopping

We’re all guilty of drawing blanks when it comes to figuring out what dad really wants, so allow me to rattle off some ideas before you settle for a bottle of red. Dempster Street Barber Shop is always great for a gift voucher, or even grab him some manscaping products if he’s a DIY kind of guy. If he’s into his coffee, pop into Downtown Espresso Bar for some Kōno brew gear. Another good one, believe it or not, is prints and frames because he probably never gets around to doing it himself. Find some iconic prints of you and your dad, or of your dad in his prime and head to the Old Courthouse Framers.

Saturday afternoon

Finals Fever

It’s that time of year again! Ports and Esperance are going head-to-head in the A-grade Esperance District Football Association grand final. Grab a picnic rug, a trusty Tupperware-packed cheese platter and your beloved dad and take him down to Newtown Condingup Football Club for the showdown. Alternatively, let him go with his mates and give him some well deserved time out, but make sure you’re around to pick him up afterwards.

Sunday morning

Breakfast time to shine

Game day! If you live at home, wake your dad up (not too early) with a fresh juice and a cup of tea (you can get T2 from Naturally Esperance), then get things heating up in the kitchen with the local produce you prepared earlier from BJ’s Fruit & Veg and Pink Lake Butchers. If you’re not at home, treat him to breakfast at Taylor St Quarters, Esperance Cafe or Ocean Blues Cafe. Shower him with gifts and a card full of funny memories from you and your siblings. After that, pop into the Museum Village Markets for a look.

Sunday afternoon

Lucky Bay Brewing

As far as Father’s Day entertainment goes, Lucky Bay Brewing has pretty much got it covered. From 11am to 6pm, you and your dad can enjoy live music, food and a full liquor license, with tasting pallets and brewery tours on offer. It’s also a good opportunity to treat him to some last minute gifts, with kegs, vouchers, growlers and LBB merchandise on sale. Better yet, entry is free.
