Located on the southeast coast of Western Australia, Esperance is located 750km from Perth, and is a popular stop for travellers crossing the Nullarbor Plain.
A town of about 10,000 people, Esperance is famous for its stunning surroundings, such as Lucky Bay in Cape Le Grand National Park, the brilliant pink Lake Hillier on Middle Island, and Twilight Beach on the Great Ocean Drive.
Regional Express Airlines offers flights from Perth’s Terminal 2 three times a day during the working week and three flights per weekend. Esperance Airport is about 20km out of town, so consider booking your Avis Car Rental or Budget Car Hire wheels in advance, to save yourself the taxi fare to town. Having a car is crucial for navigating Esperance and its surrounds.
If you’re driving from Perth, pack a thermos and lots of snacks for the eight hour journey. Depending which part of Perth you depart from, the fastest routes will take you through either Hyden (lunch at Wave Rock!) or Lake Grace.
TransWA buses leave Perth daily, with affordable rates for students. It’s a good option if you’re on a budget and don’t have wheels, but be aware—the journey takes ten hours.
Esperance’s warmest (and least windy) weather is generally between January and April, but the town makes for a perfect winter escape the rest of the year.
If you’re after a bit of action, consider Christmas, the Easter long weekend, the March long weekend when the Esperance Cup is on, as well as October’s Esperance and Districts Agricultural Show.
Book ahead during peak times, as accommodation fills up fast.
The Esperance Visitor Centre is located at the Museum Village in the town centre. They’re always good to answer your enquiries and make any recommendations.
